Carnaval - Na Locura!
Sao Luiz Do Paraitinga, Sao Paulo, Brazil - 2005
This special reportage shows the carefree energy of 4 the days of Carnaval in the little town of Sao Luiz Do Paraitinga 3 hours from the capital Sao Paulo. This is a peculiar and interesting carnival, not just because you won't meet any of the famous Samba dancers recalled by the western imaginary, but mostly because you will dance and sing on the street to the tempo of Marchinha. This music, which heavily influenced by the European colonization, was originally created in Sao Paulo. Nowadays the Sao Paulo carnival is celebrated in Samba stadiums emulating the celebration of the nearby Rio De Janeiro. Over the last 20 years in Sao Luiz the Marchinha has been presented with the original formula: the Blocos (trucks carrying musical bands dressed up in costumes) drive non-stop one after the other for 4 days. The Blocos are divided into "tournaments" and race against each other, driving around the whole town and constantly singing their own original songs ending their trip in the main square. As soon as they start everybody learns the melody by heart and in a global euphoria they keep on supporting, jumping and singing with their Blocos. At the end the winning Bloco is the one can best enliven and entertain the people.
